Our examination rooms are simple but contain all the basic elements we need to do complete physical examinations on your pets when they visit Fountain City Animal Hospital, including state-of-the-art otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes. Our “big dog” exam room is equipped with a hydraulic lift table for those times when 100-pound Rover needs a good check-up and he’s just too wiggly down on the floor. Not having to hoist him up to appropriate exam height saves your backs and ours.

Our treatment area doubles as our intensive care unit and surgery ward, as patients hospitalized here have virtual constant observation. In many ways, this is the heart of the hospital, as it is central both literally and figuratively. Our doctors, technicians, and kennel techs move through this area continually throughout the day, monitoring patients’ comfort levels as well as the accurate functioning of their intravenous catheters, lines, and infusion pumps. This is also the area of the hospital we affectionately refer to as, “the back,” when we whisk your pets away to perform all manner of services from nail trims, to electrocardiograms, to ear flushes, to glaucoma checks, to wound care, and even routine blood draws.

Our in-house lab is equipped to produce within minutes all the basic blood work results we might need in any emergency situation. Our well-trained technicians can also run routine blood chemistry panels, complete blood counts, urinalyses, ear and skin cytologies, fecal examinations, heartworm and tick-borne disease tests, and feline retrovirus tests. Our well-stocked pharmacy makes for easy one-stop care for your pets.  We keep on hand almost all the pharmaceuticals we use in small animal care, including a complete line of the safest and most effective flea, tick, and heart worm control products.

Our professional groomers have their own dedicated space, separated from any potentially sick animals and at a distance from all the hubbub of outpatients coming and going throughout the day. The room is equipped with a dedicated tub, grooming tables, cages, dryers, and ample storage for all the groomers’ special needs.

Just as we separate dogs and cats in the waiting area of the hospital, we also separate the species in our boarding areas. The cats’ boarding area is arguably the most peaceful room in the hospital. Sun shines in through the high windows in the back of the room where specifically designed cat condos house our quietest boarders.  Their cages have ample space to move from “room to room,” as well as specially designed sunken litter box areas. There is one large space for our long-term boarders to safely explore, climb, and watch the birds visiting the feeder just outside their window. All the cats have specially designated spaces to hold all their personal belongings, including any special foods they might require during their stay.

Our dog boarding area is separated into three distinct spaces. The “inner kennel” is furnished with sturdy stainless steel cages of varying sizes that are always lined with appropriate cozy soft bedding for either our overnight boarding dogs or dogs who have been dropped off for the day. This area is appropriate for only small or medium-sized dogs. Our larger dogs are housed in our indoor fully climate-controlled run area, where they have 4’ x 8’ runs to move about in during their stay. These pups are also furnished with cozy bedding over their specially designed easy-to-clean floors.

Outside, behind two sturdy fences and covered by a plastic awning are three large outdoor runs, each measuring 8’ x 15,’ where any of the dogs is intermittently allowed to run and get some fresh air. All of our boarding dogs are leash-walked a minimum of three times a day.  Like the cats, they each have a personally designated space to hold whatever belongings they come with, including all medications or special foods.

We are equipped with the most up-to-date dental equipment, including digital dental X-rays and an advanced high-speed dental unit, designed to handle all your pets’ dental needs. We recognize that dental disease is one of the most serious and overlooked areas of pet health, so we have dedicated this space in the hospital exclusively to address your pets’ oral health.

This room also serves double duty. On certain mornings, it is where your pets have their anesthesia induced and where they are prepared for their surgical procedures. This includes the (obvious when you pick them up) clipping of their hair from the surgery site, as well as a ten-minute “surgical scrub” before they are moved into the very sterile surgical suite for their procedures. When not in use for surgery prep, this room is home to a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine. We can perform both abdominal ultrasounds, which gives us a clear view of the internal architecture of normal organs as well as of any abnormal abdominal structures; and echocardiograms, which give us an internal view of the heart as well as the ability to measure the actual moment-to-moment functioning of that most important organ.

The surgery room is the least visited room in the hospital, and that’s because there is no casual meandering in and out of this sterile environment. Before entering the room, the surgeon completes an extensive scrubbing of her hands and dons a surgical mask and gown. The surgery tech also wears a mask if she is needed to be close to the patient.  The room is equipped with a high-tech surgery lamp which augments the natural light that streams in through the high window at the back of the room. It also houses up-to-date gas anesthesia machines and complex electronic monitors that continually measure all your pets’ vital signs while under anesthesia. The pass-through in the wall between the surgery suite and the prep room allows the surgery tech to deliver whatever added equipment or instruments the surgeon requires without exiting the sterility of the surgery suite. The air in this room is not shared with any place else in the hospital, and there is a positive air pressure system, prohibiting any air from the prep room to enter the surgery when the door is opened of necessity.

Everyone is aware of how important X-rays can be in the proper diagnosis of all manner of illnesses and injuries. We have always prided ourselves in the quality of our x-ray films, and we have recently updated our system to a state-of-the-art digital system which allows us to minimize the time your pet needs to spend on the x-ray table while maximizing the quality of image produced. The digital format also allows easy referrals to board-certified radiologists for interpretation of particularly challenging cases.
